creative direction and design for 2026 festival
This year’s festival art is anchored in Maya Angelou’s “Still I Rise” — a visual anthem of resilience, power, and joy. The aesthetic and inspiration pulls from the bold lines of political poster art, the brilliance of Afrofuturist visionaries, and the lush imagination of artists like Kerry James Marshall and Mati Klarwein. Flowers — especially roses rise as symbols of beauty, protest, celebration, and mourning.🌹They bloom as sound bursting from instruments, as threads weaving musicians together, as offerings of joy in defiance of silence. At the center: two hands rise up, cupped open — offering and receiving — just like jazz itself, a prayer carried on rhythm.As current powers attempt Black erasure, this festival centers Black American music, where protest is joy, music is power, and gathering is resilience.

Ya Watan to me is a reminder that you must move forward in search of necessity for soul, for love, for home, for survival. Visually I wanted to capture the unfamiliar yet magical landscape of one who is searching. Transporting the viewer to an unknown place, the world is a combination of live action, post and visual effects. We shot the video with our friend and DP Wael Gzoly who wonderfully captured the spirit.

REMIXING A CLASSIC EDM VIDEO
“Insomnia” by Faithless
Working with Sony UK, I was able to take on a more visual graphic stylist role as I added FX, GFX and treated the original classic 90’s video. This was a video remix for the 25 year anniversary re-release.
